10 Yr Anniversary Trip - Kauai

Back on May 16th, Darcy and I had our 10 year anniversary!! However, we didn't get around to celebrating until this past week when we took a trip to the island of Kauai, part of the Hawaiian islands, sans kids.

A few fun facts about Kauai that I learned:

  • Known as the “Garden Isle,” it is famous for its white sandy beaches, jagged green mountains, and tropical landscapes
  • More than 60 movies have been filmed on Kauai, including Jurassic Park, Outbreak, Blue Hawaii (yes, Elvis), 6 days 7 nights, and some scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean.
  • Kauai has the only navigable rivers in the state of Hawaii
  • Kauai is the oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands. It’s over six million years old.
  • Kauai Coffee is the largest coffee plantation in the United States.
  • Mount Wai'ale'ale near the center of the island, 5,148 ft (1,569 m) above sea level. One of the wettest spots on earth, with an annual average rainfall of 460 inches (38.3 ft; 11.7 m).
  • Waimea Caynon, the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, is located on Kauai is approx. 10 miles long and 3,000 feet deep.
  • Polynesians from the Marquesas Islands are believed to be the first to have reached the Hawaiian Islands around 300 to 600 AD. A second wave of settlers from Tahiti arrived at some later date and oppressed the original settlers from the Marquesas.
  • In 1778 Captain James Cook arrived at Waimea Bay, the first European known to have reached the Hawaiian islands.

Pretty cool place, right??

We spent the week relaxing on the resort property, exploring the beaches around the resort (Shipwreck Beach and Po'ipu Beach), snorkeling, hiking around Waimea Caynon and along the Na Pali coast, a boat tour up the Na Pali coast, an excursion up the Maunakapu and Wailua Rivers, enjoying a Lu'au, and exploring local restaurants.

Our resort in the city of Po'ipu - which was awesome:

And there is Darcy taking advantage of the water slide!

Sunset boat cruise up the Na Pali coast

Taken shortly before Darcy's sea legs wore out :( . She got a little over confident with that beer, I think ;)

Sunset over the Ni'ihau island off the West coast of Kauai.

Exploring the beaches around the resort in Po'ipu.

Getting ready to get my snorkel on at Po'ipu Beach - saw tons of tropical fish!

Oddly enough chickens roam wild all over the island.

Nothing like same Thai food and shave ice after a long hike!

Well that is about it. A huge thanks to GJ and Bobpa for watching the kids and getting them to school and back and to their various activities. No simple task!!

It has been a great 10 years and can't see what the next 10 and beyond hold!
